Never Give Up

The new year can be a time of reflection as one year ends and another begins. Perhaps 2025 didn't pan out as you wanted. Recognize that because humans aren't perfect, we all find imperfections in our performance or goal achievement. Instead of beating ourselves up, what if we had grace for us?


The key to change isn't about reinventing yourself, it is about understanding how your mind works, especially when it comes to your subconscious mind. Our logical mind can set goals like a champ but it is our subconscious where the problems occur. The subconscious has a different agenda from our logical mind and may sabotage us along the way, even though our mind "means well."Examples of subconscious sabotage include: making excuses, doing the opposite of the goals we set, starting out strong only to fizzle soon after, etc.


Here are some keys to making changes in our life stick:

1) Recognize you have two different parts of your mind. Logic can set a goal, however if the subconscious is not on board there will likely be problems with achieving that goal. The subconscious prefers pleasure over pain and protects against change, even if that change is healthy and better for us. Use subconscious strategies to get both of parts of your brain on board and the habit change will be easier and more effective. 


2) Consistency is the key to habit change. No matter how difficult it is in the beginning to get up early or start going to the gym regularly, it is key to stay with it. Science recommends anywhere from 7-45 days of repetition to establish a firm new habit.


3) While changing habits might seem difficult, it is achievable. One of the keys is to Never Give Up. You won't fail as long as you never give up.
